The Civil War, Part I: Crash Course US History #20
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In which John Green ACTUALLY teaches about the Civil War. In part one of our two part look at the US Civil War, John looks into the causes of the war, and the motivations of the individuals who went to war. The overarching causes and the individual motivations were not always the same, you see. John also looks into why the North won, and whether that outcome was inevitable. The North's industrial and population advantages are examined, as are the problems of the Confederacy, including its need to build a nation at the same time it was fighting a war. As usual, John doesn't get much into the actual battle by battle breakdown. He does talk a little about the overarching strategy that won the war, and Grant's plan to just overwhelm the South with numbers. Grant took a lot of losses in the latter days of the war, but in the end, it did lead to the surrender of the South. How did the battle if Gettysburg change schools?
-
Did the confederate states vote in the election of 1864?
-
The USA should be split into two countries. It just isn't working out.
-
I'm actually related to Robert E Lee. That would be my biggest claim to fame
-
when black people say all white people are racist...cuz they seem to have forgotten that hundreds of thousands of white men went to war and died for the purpose of allowing them freedom.
-
you idiot it wasn't just because slavery the south did not like how the country was been run at the time
-
2X Speed...
-
Can we debate about if the Civil War was about slavery in the comments or is that allowed?
-
poor Biden who's from Delaware lmao
-
God's plan... lol.
-
I still can't believe the amount of people who are still bitter over losing the Civil War. We lost, get over it. The South is a better place now than if it had actually stayed the Confederacy.
-
When John mentions the Confederate general's last words I think of Looking to Alaska lol at the parallels
-
I am confuse, the United States Supreme Court, Dred Scott Case, ruled in favor of Slavery. So why would the Southern States start a War about Slavery? Read Crimes of The Civil War and the Real Lincoln.
-
fairly certain that the civil war was more than just about slavery, but ok
-
*I should start studying sooner
-
I have my midterms tomorrow and i'm like trying to learn all this in one night
-
anyone else hoping this will replace the hours of studying that you should've done for your final

at 10:26 John mentions that the south would never threaten a northern city ever again. Chambersburg Pennsylvania was burned down by the confederates in July 30, 1864 when they didn't pay ransom. that also happened to Hagerstown Maryland but the townspeople lowered the ransom an were saved. why isn't this mentioned? Chambersburg is the only norther city to be completely burned down by the Confederate.
-
as soon as this idiot said it was all about slavery, he lost all credibility

Am I the only one who tries to predict what words will be highlighted and given a picture in the mystery document?
