The Economics of Immigration: Crash Course Econ #33
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Is Immigration good or bad? Immigration is a touchy subject in the United States. The 2016 election has been filled with debate about the subject, and both proponents and opponents have lots of reasons for their stance. But, this is a show about economics, and when it comes to the effects of immigration on economies, there is actually a lot of consensus. It turns out, immigration is economically beneficial. This is awesome! Is there a transcript?
-
yes but what about illegal immigration?
-
It's 2016 and they've made this video as if they never heard of immigrantion crisis in Europe. I really wonder how unemployments rates reaching 50% combined with massive social aid, benefit the economy of any country.
I know it's mainly about US, but still. -
1208 people vote for Trump/Brexit. Post-truth society can't stand informative videos!
-
Why on earth would you concentrate on absolute GDP and not GDP per capita?
-
where are all the sources for these studies?
-
Lol I'm Canadian.
-
This video is very obviously designed to do one thing, push a liberal agenda on viewers.
-
1. Raise concern about drugs and rewarding people for illegal behavior.
2. Pivot to changing national opinion about immigration, do not address concern raised two seconds ago.
3. Don't even touch the concerns many have about other kinds of criminals entering the U.S.
Wonderful, thanks for that even keel analysis.
I want immigration to be as simple as possible while still being safe. On a personal level, I am in favor of simplifying the process it takes to become a citizen, and I am in favor of allowing all non-criminal immigrants who are here illegally to remain here while obtaining legal status so that they can live in the open and pay taxes like everyone else. That said, I feel pretty disappointed by this video because even though Adriene said that "if it was about economics alone, there wouldn't be much debate," that's what she spent the whole video talking about. Why not address the reasons it IS such a debate? Why not talk about safety and crime? Obviously most immigrants are not criminals, which is why President-Elect Trump's statements about Mexicans and Muslims were so inflammatory, but if we run in the polar opposite direction and have open borders as this video suggests might be a good idea, how do we protect ourselves from the few who are? That's the kind of question I want to see an answer to. That's the thing many are upset about.
I'm not saying scrap the economics argument. Plenty of people are concerned about their jobs being taken by immigrants who accept lower wages (though brushing such concerns under the rug by saying that effect is probably temporary is maybe not the most effective strategy for allaying fears), but that is not the only issue at stake. This video sounds more like it's trying to advance a position than to genuinely examine an important issue. -
dissapointed u failed to mention racial differences in IQ, seems very relevant.
-
i rlly don't get GDP

WHERE IS JACOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Quick questions, isn't the benefit of immigration strongly dependent on the presence of capital and, especially for low educated immigrants, depending on the position of you country on the production possibility frontier?
-
Economist's predictions are basically the weakest argument you can offer, no matter what the debate is.

Sounds nice but I am not getting the math on this. There s a finite level of money supply and sharing it with a larger population would divide it into a smaller amount of money per person. Which would make us need to print more money to supply a larger population. This would lower our valuation of the dollar. Especially when people are sending a portiion of the money to another country. Lowering the money supply even more.
One of the current economic problems with the US is that a large portion of our money supply is stuck in the hands of the rich. So that money doesnt circulate to the middle class. Illegal immigration takes more money out of our money supply. Tell me how that helps the rest of the country....I am not getting it. Educational answers please... -
The picture of the Alantic slave trade raciest it is not multicultural, they are all black and that is not true history. The multiculturalism of the indentured severvants and slaves was vast. Even Berkley a California University has pages explaining the situation. I would take those facts over a leftwing youtube blogger any day. As far as the United States immigration, for the most part the immigrants do not take the lower paying jobs, they may temporary but it is human nature to strive for the highest possible pay to care for ones family so they overflow into construction jobs under subcontractors that are their culture and give perference to their culture when hiring. Same in truck driving. With other immigrant groups they are paid under the table for hotel and store jobs. The foriegn owner wins because he is not paying half wages in tax to the government and doesn't have to have extra staff for breaks. At the same time the employee may work longer days but they recieve an average of 3500 cash a month which is a lot better than most legal citizens can make. Pew research proves these numbers, native business is going down and immigrant business up. Their childrens college education is paid for by scholorships and grants while papered Americans are not given the same educational opportunities. They send the pretax money from the businesses back to their home countries known as remittance payments. They are able to spend and collect it tax free by filtering it through family members. It also helps that they know how to deal with a corupt government better than an American raised on the false pretense of John Wayne movies where the good guy always gets ahead. Americans are having a hard time processing and communicating the injustice that is being promoted and funded by the highest levels of government. Thank God for WikiLeaks, if Killery got into office she would be 3x's worse than Merkle(they are close friends). We only need to look to Euroupe to see what the Elite want to do to the US. Many of the propaganda videos regarding immigration or race end being made by foundations directly funded by the government. It is not the fault of the people, the United Nations has laid out these plans to equal the world's wealth, most political leaders have signed legal agreements to ake sure the plans happen, they are not just goals of wishful thinking. Billions apon billions of US tax dollars have been given raise Africa up out of poverty and all it has done has padded the pockets of Africa's corupt politicians. In return the US tax payers are told they are racist towards black people, which I think like all races there are some opportunist in the black community that go along with that narrative. But much of the US black population are educated and do not so the government is having to push harder and harder to instagate racial tension(to the point of brain washing/rewriting history) so that government leaders can create chaos and bleed the country out of any wealth that may remain. They are in the process of turning the country into Venezula.
