In 1858, at a time when immigrant Irish and Germans were flooding St. Louis, Grant, running a farm on the outskirts of the city, purchased a slave to provide labor. Why would Grant do this? Take on the legal responsibility to take care of a person 24/7, providing him with food, shelter, clothing, and health care, when he could simply pay the man a wage for the day and be rid of him?

Slavery is not free market capitalism. You can only have free market capitalism if workers are free to choose where to work. Slaves can't do this. Adam Smith was anti slavery.

The railroad build by Chinese slave, and the rest build by black. and the white, use gun point at them. This is American History, build by Violent and Slavery, because Whites always think they are better and deserve to be King for no apparent reason. it is just their birth right.

I'm sorry, but you have to be a TOTAL IDIOT to think slavery helped American economics! It HURT American economics!!
-
The north legalized slavery first. Georgia was the last. Jews brought slavery to America not white Christians but jews. Christian abolitionist not Jews fought to stop it... There were union slave states when the civil war started. Kkk founder Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Jew. Prove me wrong..

If you want to know more about this read the book "Captives as Commodities"
-
If you still don't believe that the civil war was solely about the right to keep slaves, that it was about states rights, their economy, or taxation. Go read the declaration of secession for each state, in the states own words.

What a baffling coincidence! A slave would take lashes equivalent to the amount they were below quota, until they met quota, then, the quota would be raised. Damn....aren't we still dealing with the same dynamic here? Only now, instead of lashes, we loose our stuff, our credit, our self respect etc.

What most white folks refuse to acknowledge is this - no other group of people were dehumanized and their culture ripped away from them. No other group had laws, Jim Crow and segregation engrained into our laws. No other group is criminalized even when they haven't committed a crime (Trayvon Martin). Stop with the false flag argument that others were enslaved. No group of people have been treated like the slaves and their descendants.

It's simply amazing how someone could give a thumbs down on this ugly truth of American history. The truth hurts.

Slavery has been gone for a very long time, no? Does anyone in the western world wish slavery was still in place? This s the kind of garbage that is going to make a race war inevitable. Cultural Marxism is only going to keep nature and self preservation at bay for a limited period of time. Wake up to the manipulation.

Adam Smith in his book "Wealth of Nations" (Available for FREE from amazon.com as an e-book) examined Slavery v Free Labor and found that Free Labor (Employing Free Men and Women) was a vastly superior system as Free Labor would work harder, apply more skill as they wanted to maintain their employment and create more wealth for the Land Owner; Slaves would only work hard enough to avoid being whipped, didn't care about the quality of their work, or the product they produced as the Owner had to provide housing, food, clothing, medical care, Overseers to force them to work. Smith concluded that Slavery was a rather poor means to generate wealth.
Frederick Douglass noted in his Autobio Life & Times of Frederick Douglass (Available for $0.99 from amazon.com) that the most victimized group because of Slavery were Poor Whites as they couldn't find employment as they would have been glad to do the work that Slaves were forced to do; Booker Washington pointed out in his Autobio "Up From Slavery" (Available from amazon.com for Free) that Slavery was a two-way street as the Slave Owner became a Slave to his Slaves unaware until Slavery ended to find out that they didn't have the needed skills to maintain their own property.
Given the number of Slaves required to do the work they did, and the lack of care they had doing it, and the expenses involved; Slavery depressed the economy of the South by a third. -
In the Union, factory owners eventually learned it was more profitable to just pay the employee a wage, and not have to worry about providing them with housing and food.
-
Gov't, by subsidizing slave ships, paying for the cost of capture and forcing poor white farmers to work on slave patrols, prolonged the heinous institution much longer than it should've been.

America had slavery???????????????
stop the presses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Interesting segment. It's shocking how many on the mainstream of conservative thought have started to defend slavery.
-
republicans took care of that problem
dems have hated the pubs ever since -
Slaves built the White House. Our whole country is built on slave labor.
-
Most socities unfortunately run on slavery. From the ancient Romans to America, it was only Christians good Christians, that fought the slave owners of Rome to America. I hate republicans and demcrats and all of the governments worldwide because they all have some type of brutal slavery. The jails are still having de facto slavery.Prostitution is slavery, so sad. We still have to fight it. I grew up on Long Island with a lot of black middle class and white racists who would justify slavery, make excuses for racism, classism, even the blacks also I would be the one defending the poor while I was always outnumbered. John Woolman was one of the few people who was a Quaker who spoke out. America is a republic like Rome based on slavery and it will fall to foreigners because the Americans are so corrupt like the Romans and Greeks.

Capitalism abolished slavery on the ground that free labor was more productive than unfree labor ["slavery"], and by proclaiming freedom of movement and choice of occupation. Specialization under division of labor assured that those most predisposed and able to do given job, did it more efficiently than undifferentiated labor [slaves]. Division of labor NOT slavery, made capitalism! Learn your history, Marxists!
