The Hunger Games and Capitalism: EconMovies #10
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
EconMovies explain economic concepts through movies. In this episode, I use The Hunger Games to explain the idea of specialization and comparative advantage. I also discuss the advatages and disadvantages of capitalism including the focus on consumption and income inequality. But, keep in mind that we should abandon capitalism and free markets. Do you agree? Leave a comment. Oh, and don't forget to watch the bonus rant at the end. By the way, the "Aww Yeah" at the kissing scene came from one of my favorite YouTube channels, Studio C. This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVnIcxDZoVY

Right up until the income inequality business and dealings further.
I was disappointed that you didn't connect income inequality with the government intervention. -

I don't think there is a problem with capitalism. The idea of inequality, as far as wealth is concerned, is fine where it is. Yes, Bill Gates is insanely rich, but the amount of work and effort he put into his business reflects his earnings. He worked hard and he got far. Some people may not like hearing that someone just worked harder than you, but it happens. Competition is key, and putting in rules to force people from gaining what they've earned is counter productive.
Also, Capitalism is not responsible for the consumption of resources and pollution, people are. Sure, if you created a totalitarian state where everything was limited and things were given out in regulated packages from the state, yes, you could control how much the people consumed, but you could do the same with better education and social changes that don't involve limiting freedoms or a totalitarian state.
Lastly, this is a case of selfishness and greed, not of the haves, but of the have-nots. More often do I see people who promote anti-capitalist ideas say that they deserve healthcare, high wages for little work, and any opportunity possible handed to them. That system is unsustainable, pandering, and will promote people into laziness. If you couldn't control your consumptive urges like the other side believes, then why would you be able to control your work ethic?
It's selfish to expect other people to care for you, you shouldn't think that way because you will end up poor, hoping that one day someone will save you from yourself. No one will because no one wants to take care of you. Take care of yourself, be responsible, and yes, it might be stressful, but you will have earned it. Maybe along the way you can help those whom you want to help, just as the system promotes.
Also to those who want to tell me that people with disabilities, or that they have prejudices against them, can't work, that's not true and you know it. There are a wide array of jobs that even people who are paralyzed can engage in. Apply yourself and you will be able to do anything. Capitalism promotes merit over race, and is the best system for true equality: not of outcome, but of opportunity. -
I'd like to thank you for your honesty and helping many people to learn in a different way about this subject. Sadly I have to say that in my opinion we will never get to equality income since we are so manipulated by media and government and the people who control the government won't let the 90% get to the point where they can make changes to improve the quality of life they have and the 10% won't change...The system has some serious problems and the "invisible hand" is not working so well (crisis-war-etc). Obviously the change can be attainable as soon as people realize what they need and stop getting or trying to get what they want. You said it. New phone when actually you didn't need it. If we stop consuming they way we are maybe some real solutions may develope. I'm not sure if I can change the world but I'm sure I will get to the point where I live a more efficient life with just the goods I need. I'm working on it. Please keep doing your work. Greetings from Antofa.
