Following the shocking murder yesterday afternoon of the MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox, campaigning for the EU referendum was suspended. The planned UCL EU Referendum Debate, which had been due to feature leading figures from both campaigns, was therefore changed into a Meet the Experts Q&A. A panel of academics with expertise in the politics and economics of the EU and the processes around the referendum answered a wide range of questions from audience members. The panelists were: - Professor Anand Menon, Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King’s College London and Director of the UK in a Changing Europe initiative - Dr Swati Dhingra, Lecturer in Economics at the London School of Economics and at the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance - Dr Simon Usherwood, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Surrey and Fellow of the UK in a Changing Europe initiative - Dr Alan Renwick, Deputy Director of the Constitution Unit at UCL. The event was organised by the UCL Constitution Unit, UCL School of Public Policy, and UCL European Institute. It was chaired by Professor Meg Russell, Director of the Constitution Unit.

The death of Jo Cox was tragic and senseless. She is reported to have intervened in an altercation and been subsequently stabbed and shot by a man who was mentally ill. In other words, Jo Cox does not appear to have been targeted for political reasons. So it's awfully suspicious for the Prime Minister to suspend referendum campaigning over a murder which has no apparent link to Brexit. (Though the media are doing their typical best to find a link between the Leave campaign and violence.)I'm sure at least one other person in the UK died senselessly yesterday, and at least one more will die in a like manner every day in the days leading up to the referendum. Is David Cameron going to use all of those deaths as a pretext for shutting down the Brexit debate? Furthermore, Jo Cox's husband issued a vague and insinuating statement to the press in which he said that it was "hate that killed Jo", and urged "that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her." Hatred? What hatred? The man who killed Jo Cox has a history of mental illness and it's not at all clear what his motive was. So it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the MP's husband is actually using her murder for political advantage. I've never seen a man enjoying his wife's death so much.
