The War of 1812 - Crash Course US History #11
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In which John Green teaches you about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and its former colonial overlord England. It started in, you guessed it 1812. The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on Twitter. It's awesome. Good news for Canadians.
Bad news for natives. -
British Empire and Canada beat the USA because although no changes to borders were made, USA got the brunt of the damage and even lost their capital and government building, the White House. Unless you count the natives who were the real losers. To me at least.

(1) The Beatles invaded in 1964, not 1961.
(2) This guy is pretty annoying. -
a place where people hadn't invented the wheel can't quite be called civilized can they? this is probably a low key "racist" remark or whatever but what defines civilization if not technology and industry ?
-
should have made this for episode 12
get it -
I loved how they called the US the pants of Canada. That analogy works. Canada seems to have the heart and as of November 2016 they seem to have the head as well. The US having a tough shoulder and Canada having the other one but soft. Both strategies keep America as a whole safe. . But I guess that would make South America the feet hehe.

So, why didn't they just march through New York anyway? What would the federalists really do? Harass the ARMED soldiers?
-
Andrew Jackson looks a lot like John Kerry
-
It was a tie,sorry canada
-
i thought canadians were really fat. And by the way john, you no you don't fit in that shirt.
-
Thank god Canada won. Just look at how fucked up America is today.
-
We should throw this guy out for liking Canada.
-
the British revenge?
-
If the concept of American Citizenship at the time was sketchy at best...isn't unfair to say Americans treatment of Indians?
-
well america won in the end.
-
was "free health care" actually a good thing in Canada. I mean, the taxes are so high compared to the US, so they are basically paying for their health care
-
america lost against canada lol, you learn something new everyday
-
I'm pretty sure if the British saw a good reason to take a serious war against the US back then, they easily would have done so. There just weren't any benefits to such a thing and there were benefits to having the US not be occupied by the British. The British were, of course, war weary since they just finished fighting Napoleon.
I think when you start to argue that you didn't win or lose a war, especially because it may have positivily effected your country (and assuming without the war that wouldn't have happened anyway) because of the effects it had on the future of your country...you're just looking for ways to justify losing, or drawing, or not winning, to be able to say that you won. -
Looks like a Bioshock reference at 7:30.
