6 "Banzai!: Japan (1931-1942)" 5 December 1973 The rise of the Japanese Empire, the Sino-Japanese War, the Soviet-Japanese border conflicts, Pearl Harbor and the early Japanese successes in the fall of Malaya and Singapore. Interviewees include Koichi Kido, Minoru Genda, and J. G. Smyth. Following Japan's conquest of eastern Asia the Allies finally respond with sanctions. They prove so threatening to Japan that it prepares to conquer Southeast Asia to secure the resources it needs. But first the threat from the British and American Pacific fleets must be eliminated. The series has 26 episodes. Producer Jeremy Isaacs asked Noble Frankland, then director of the Imperial War Museum, to list fifteen main campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each. The remaining eleven episodes are devoted to other matters, such as the rise of the Third Reich, home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupation in the Netherlands, and the Nazis' use of genocide. Episode 1 begins with a cold open describing the massacre at the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane by the Waffen SS. The same event is referenced again at the end of Episode 26 and the series ends with Laurence Olivier uttering the poignant word, "Remember".

Best all around doc on WWII. None are perfect, all have mistakes. All should be watched with the fact that winners write the history's and never admit there mistakes.

At the prologue, Olivier speaks the line that the elderly couple are engaging in a "quaint ceremony" of atonement for the Class A war criminals. It always makes me cringe, because a Shintoist or Buddhist might look on our Christian rites of intercessory prayers to Jesus and the saints as "quaint."

Hirohito was a war criminal and was spared death by hanging by McArthur who believed the Japanese considered him a god. I doubt the Japanese people would have objected to his hanging. Anyone have data that my simple opinion is wrong?

This episode is like saying China was easily defeated...but the actual war was not that simple. World War II lasted 8 years in my country.

Tragedy and humiliation. Tragedy for China, Pearl harbor, and numerous Asian countries, and humiliation for Britain.

japs at ww2 were just killers even worst than the germans..

If Adm. Kimmel was just worried about his stars, as thousands of sailors died, then screw him and his legacy. He deserved demotion and maybe worse. Kind of hard to argue USN was prepared, despite numerous warnings.

Bombing Chinese cities..? the Lefties don't teach that in schools when they get pupils to imagine they are in Nagasaki when those cruel Americans drop the A Bomb - and to write about their experience...
-
Great documentary. Still a slight of white-man bias, calling the Japanese "thugs" and having "no balance" as to being on their mothers' backs as babies. It's these and other generalizations about the Japanese that led them to being defeated by the Japanese.
-
Man those Japanese seem pretty excited

Those eye-witness accounts are so compelling! Makes this series one of the best I've ever seen about WW2... If not The best!
