U.S. Debate Grips World Economy

On Tuesday uncertainty gripped Asian markets as investors braced for a potentially pivotal U.S. presidential debate. Stocks were shunned while safe haven bonds and the yen were favored. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.3 percent in early trade. South Korea fell 0.6 percent. As a higher yen threatened exporter sales and profits, Japan's Nikkei dropped 1 percent. The debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump could have a big impact with the race seemingly so close. Markets have tended to see Clinton as the candidate of the status quo.
