UNU-GCM – Graduate Masterclass with Professor Noam Chomsky – 7 November 2016

UNU-GCM hosted a graduate masterclass with Professor Noam Chomsky for 200 participants on November 7th at the Sant Pau Modernist Site, with reflections on his work by Professor Paula Casal, University Pompeu Fabra and Dr. Paul Bou-Habib, University of Essex. Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, logician, social critic and globally influential activist, widely known as the father of modern linguistics. He is one of the most widely quoted intellectuals living today and is the author of over 100 books on topics such as linguistics, war, politics and mass media. Professor Chomsky holds a PhD in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania; he joined the faculty at MIT in 1955 and was appointed full professor in 1961. Paula Casal, ICREA Professor at Universidad Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), is associate editor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics, editor of Law, Ethics and Philosophy, board member of Academics Stand Against Poverty and president of The Great Ape Project-Spain. She has held teaching and research positions at Keele, Harvard, Lovain-la-neuve, Oxford and Reading. She publishes in journals such as Ethics, Economics and Philosophy, Journal of Medical Ethics, Journal of Political Philosophy, Political Studies and Utilitas on social and global justice, multiculturalism, gender, animals, evolutionism and enhancement. Paul-Bou Habib teaches at the Department of Government, University of Essex and has published widely on political theory, human rights, justice and social philosophy. His research interests include theories of distributive justice and the concept of dignity in normative political theory.
