Corporations are merely social constructs to produce profits and grow the owners wealth and advance technology through competition. It should be up to the shareholders themselves to be charitable as ultimately the company is spending their money and taking most of the credit for it whilst the shareholder is getting nothing in return. If shareholders them selves are chartiable that means they a more associated with the people they help and would encorage them to give more. The law (including international law) should be used to impose obligations on companies if society wants businesses to be more ethical and sustainable. Appearing to engage in CSR is mostly used for ulterior motives ie CEOs looking like nice kind people whilst not actually acting ethically at all basically leading to a society that fools people and inflates profits illegitimately . A good example would be Volkswagen and its phoney emission testing for its cars. The idea of CSR creates more problems than it solves!
