This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Are we still progressing when we are only looking at one way of progressing? This talk sets out to explore societies where, had they not been interrupted and influenced, their form of progress may have looked drastically different and may well have been more sustainable than that of the technological age. Going further, Christina hopes to inspire dangerous thoughts regarding the future and whether returning to traditional ways of living is possible for a world that has become so accustomed to the technological age, to 'progress'. Christina Brook is a Pearson College United World College scholar originally comes from Kaitaia, New Zealand. At 18 years old, she has experienced many societal struggles that have seen her develop into the character she is today. With an Indigenous Maori ethnic background and plans to study Political Science at Middlebury College in the coming fall, she has great aspirations to be involved with Indigenous peoples’ development in the political realm. A strong belief in the power of Indigenous people and traditional practices inspires her to speak out about environmental issues, loss of language and loss of traditional ways of knowing. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
