You'd be wrong. China is changing, and sometimes too fast. So Winston and I delve into something that we find a little disappointing sometimes, and that is the lack of maintanence in China. If you go to most old areas, you can almost see the history pouring out from the ancient buildings and temples, but they are almost never maintained. This problem is to the point where we are having a difficult time finding anything that is more than 50 years old, simply because it is all collapsed. This isn't limited to old things either. Chinese people have had an issue with maintenance with most things for a long time. Hop on and find out more! Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between China and the west, and shed some light on the situation. Every week, we take you to a new place in China on our bikes, cover a topic, and reply to your questions. Awesome video! Thank you! I think the mentality you're describing owes a lot to one's sense of pride. You can see a similar lack of maintenance and the same disinterest in their community in America, primarily among the poor. What's interesting to consider is where the line is drawn between things people take pride in and maintain, and stuff they do not (their 'pride bubble' if you will), and how this area shifts as income level changes. If you start with the premise that we are all created equal, and you then compare the pride bubble vs income between China and the west, it raises some interesting questions. (*full disclosure, I have obviously not done any such study outside of my own head. Actual results could vary greatly from my personal, theorized (read:made-up) results) On the surface, it would appear as though western societies are better maintained. Since we're assuming assuming equality at birth (ie, we're not going to be racist. I know that should be a given, but this is the internet, so I feel the need to point it out), individually, we should have similar levels of pride. What is the difference between our societies that causes one person's pride bubble to be greater than another's? I hypothesize that it stems from the different forms of government, and, more specifically, how much each individual feels they are a part of their own society. Now throw in those communities in Europe and South America where they have these festivals and entire communities work together to build floats, or compete or what have you, and it makes me wonder how we can build upon the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of each to come up with a future, perfect society.

wow i was expecting a low quality sound vid on a bike but god damn u put some effort into
great work -
That's not only a Chinese problem, this is also a rampant problem in the M.E. when it comes to construction, partially due to a lot of curroption (both public and private).
-
Thai temples look so great, this is sad.
-
When he say its only $20...China has a very low earning rate per person. So if you make only a $1 a day. Your not going to spend $20 very easily.
-
It's sad how the communists destroyed China's culture and literally destroyed everything that made china china :/
-
So reliance on the government for everything (communist system) causes people to not give a shit about shared public facilities which results in a mentality of lack of caring for non other but oneself. (is that what this is about?)
-
Simple answer: Mao killed the people who respected the past and tried to maintain it.
-
卧槽,能不能别用这种图做封面?
-
They only care for themselves because they cannot afford to care anything else. The cruel society forced them to do so, it's really sad.
-
Sounds like Home Depot should move to China and start an ad campaign.
-
How the second economic in the world like that .... That Shit...
-
a lot of it probably has to do with reliance on the government for infrastructure maintenance

So China is like a giant Detroit...

I lived in China for about two years. People are always amazed when they visit and see how fast they build a sky scraper or a road. Then they have to tear it all down again because they didn't put in the wiring or pipping. It was very common to see that kind of thing. Don't get me wrong. They got things built and fast. But I would always read in the news papers about a part of a building falling apart and hurting someone or even killing someone. When I talk to a friend from China they state things are still the same. That was over twenty years ago when I lived there.

Pity. Before watching this video i imagined China was like Japan in their cultural history upkeep but apparently its zero fucks given there. ( or the result of its govt)
The Nail houses in the middle of the roads were hilarious. China is a mess when it comes to some things. -
Now I understand the chinese people I've met. They are all just dumb!

None of the things you showed in the video is "very" old. They are less than 20 years old and they do not maintain it because they know the government is going to build something new there in 5-10 years. The poor are all waiting to sell their house to developers so they are saving their money. It is a mentality that comes from starving and exploitation. What you may have today may not be there tomorrow. If you show you have wealth someone may come and take it from you. Who will take it from you? The Machus during the Qing dynasty, the European powers and Americans during the Opium Wars, the Japanese during the Japanese Invasion, the CCP during the cultural revolution or any other future power. Give the country peace for 200 years and see the mentality of the citizens.
