View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/why-the-metric-system-matters-matt-anticole For the majority of recorded human history, units like the weight of a grain or the length of a hand weren’t exact and varied from place to place. Now, consistent measurements are such an integral part of our daily lives that it’s hard to appreciate what a major accomplishment for humanity they’ve been. Matt Anticole traces the wild history of the metric system. Lesson by Matt Anticole, animation by Globizco.

All systems of measurement are equally arbitrary and socially constructed.

Very informative. But: what about the satellite?

I'd like to thank the
snail eatersFrench for creating metric. Now only if you could simplify your counting system......... -
Look, if you use the Imperial System, that's good. If you use the Metric System, that's good. If you understand both completely, that's amazing. As an American, I can see that the Metric System seems to be a lot easier than the Imperial System. But just it's easier, doesn't mean that it's completely accurate; which is why most people use both (like me). And another thing, I'm not going to be bashing those who use the Metric System only or the Imperial System only. Why? Because I'm not some ethical asshole; and to be honest, I see a lot of those on both sides. The "diehard Metric System users" and the "diehard Imperial System users", is what I call them. I'm not putting shade on any side, I'm just stating an observation. Anyways, that's enough rambling from me. If someone reads this, thank you for your understanding and time.✌

-
You can't say anything against Americans, because they are instantly triggered... They always act like America was the best country in the world, but actually... it isn't. Just get over it.

It`s a generational thing. New generations that are in school right now and are going to enter school in the future are going to learn metrical system and live in a world with two different standards of measurement. I doubt that in 50 years USA will still use imperial system as the main system, scientists already use metric, industry worldwide use metric, and even consumer use metric, it`s common for the food packages for example to come with both the gram/mililiters and the pounds/OZ to inform consumers.
-
I feel like the US would have to change a metric ton if they wanted to change.
-
The US sucks. All you 'Murican twats need to grow up.
-
I cannot believe there are people defending the u.s. system of units.... the metric system is clearly superior. It's easier and much more efficient. Also the rest of the world uses it so whats the point in having 3 countries in the whole entire world that use a different system to everyone else? It makes no sense.
-
Can I just say that as a Brit we still uses miles instead of kilometres as the norm and driving speeds and distances, also yards as well and feet and inches. These are all very common measurements, that aren't metric, so we're not completely metric, just sayin'.
