The Necessary War World War One BBC Documentary World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war, a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents' technological and industrial sophistication, and tactical stalemate. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, paving the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved.

One would think it was a German assasin that killed the Arch-Duke... also ignoring that the Kaiser adamantly told Austria-Hungary that he DID NOT want them to declare war on the Serbs.. or that he tried to work out terms with the Czar, his cousin, to avoid war. To anyone not familiar with the Great War, I suggest you go elsewhere to learn. Oh, and Wilhelm was FAR from weak. If anything, overcoming his crippled right arm forced him to be significantly tougher and more disciplined than most other people

Why don't they explain NewImperialism and the conflict it brought. Britain grabbed most of the territory with France in Africa upsetting Germany, Morocco crisis is a clear example of it. Britain always wanted to grab Ottoman territory in middle east and check Russian influence in Balkan States. End of 19th Century almost all Asia and Africa was conquered and in order to get colony you have to expel old colonial power with Britain in most cases. They were also afraid of growing German steel industry. Sooner or later these imperialists especially Britain will have to answer the call of people they subjugated and exploited and will have to beg for mercy.

I think the documentary is well made and interesting, but it seems very constructed to support the narrative and conclusion of its creator. In merit though, he does say "in my view" and "i would propose that", not stating it as being objectively true.Whats strange though is that he seems to claim to propose some new way of seeing ww1 when in fact it seems his conclusion is exactly the same as it has always been...?

A lot of the 20th century wars came as a result of franz ferdinand being shot. The Germans retaliated with the nazis due to the restrictions enforced on them in the treaty of Versailles in 1919.
This created a knock-on effect with a lot of 20th century wars up until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 -
Would it have been a bad thing if Germany had won this war? I mean, they would just take more territory for themselves and preserve the Second Reich. The Third Reich would never come into being...

at that time Britain care not for democracy or freedom, they themselves had an empire that treated colonies practically as slaves for labor and wealth, i guess history is indeed written by the victor, Britain trying to make themselves look like saints
